La preservación digital es imprescindible en cualquier institución que valore sus recursos digitales. Desafortunadamente, aún existen múltiples repositorios, bibliotecas digitales y sistemas de información que, por distintas circunstancias, prescinden de una estrategia de preservación digital que contrarreste los efectos de la obsolescencia tecnológica, lo que supone un riesgo potencial para sus colecciones digitales.
Un elemento fundamental de la preservación es el proceso de creación de objetos digitales, pues en él se definen características relevantes de los archivos que pueden facilitar su administración a través del tiempo. En el caso de la digitalización, contempla la incorporación de procesos de selección de materiales y formatos de acuerdo con estándares y buenas prácticas, la inclusión de información de contexto suficiente, y la generación de contenidos confiables, auténticos y accesibles a largo plazo.
En el presente documento se describe el trabajo realizado por los departamentos de Preservación y Reprografía, Catalogación y Servicios de Información, de la Hemeroteca Nacional de México, y por el Departamento de Informática, adscrito a la Coordinación de Innovación y Estrategia Digital del Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas de la UNAM, para la implementación de procesos de preservación digital en sus proyectos de digitalización y distribución de contenidos digitales, a través de la plataforma web Hemeroteca Nacional Digital de México.
Digital preservation is essential in any institution that values its digital resources. However, there are multiple repositories, digital libraries and information systems that, due to different circumstances, do not have a digital preservation strategy that counteracts the effects of technological obsolescence, which represents a potential risk for their digital collections.
A fundamental part of preservation is the process of creating digital objects, since at this stage, relevant characteristics of the files that can facilitate their management over time, are defined. In the case of digitization, it involves the incorporation of appraisal and selection processes for materials and formats in accordance with standards and good practices, the inclusion of sufficient context information, and the generation of reliable, authentic, and long term accessible content.
This document describes the work carried out by the Preservation and Reprography, Cataloging, and Information Services departments, by the National Newspaper Library of México and by the IT department attached to the Coordination of Innovation and Digital Strategy of the National Library of México, for the implementation of digital preservation processes in its projects of digitization and distribution of digital content through the web platform Hemeroteca Nacional Digital de México.
